History

Grand Canyon West is managed by the Hualapai Tribe and developed in recent decades to provide access to the West Rim—the Skywalk and tribal viewpoints are part of this distinct administration outside Grand Canyon National Park.

Conservation

The Mojave is fragile: stick to marked tracks to protect Joshua tree roots and cryptobiotic soil, pack out waste, and follow tribal rules to reduce footprint.

Adventure tips

Hydrate before you goBring a full reusable water bottle—desert heat and dust make dehydration easy even on a six-hour day.

Secure loose itemsUse zip pockets or a small pack for phones and sunglasses; dust and bumps will dislodge unsecured gear.

Dress for sun and dustLight long sleeves, a bandana or buff, and UV-rated sunglasses help protect skin and eyes on exposed sections.

Follow guide instructionsATV handling varies by model and surface—stick to posted speeds and the guide’s route to avoid fines or damage to fragile habitat.

Recommended gear

Closed-toe hiking shoes or boots: Protects feet from heat, rocks and the ATV footwell on rough desert trails.
Sunscreen & UV sunglasses: Strong desert sun and reflective sand make high SPF and eye protection essential.
Light windproof layer: Mornings and canyon rim breezes can be cool—bring a packable layer for the van ride and breaks.
Bandana or dust buff: Covers nose and mouth against dust and reduces grit under the helmet.
