Dawn breaks over Cusco as a small convoy gathers, engines ticking into life and breath fogging in the cold mountain air. The drive to Cusipata slips through valley farms and low Andean clouds; llamas graze just off the road and the land opens into the high puna where the wind feels like a deliberate guide. After a country breakfast, riders mount fully equipped ATVs and cut across ridgelines toward Vinicunca — the so-called Rainbow Mountain — where mineral bands run like paint across a steep flank.

No expert skills are required; operators provide a safety briefing and basic instruction, but prior comfort on ATVs helps.
The viewpoint is around 4,900–5,100 m; altitude sickness is possible—acclimatize, hydrate, avoid alcohol beforehand, and inform guides of symptoms.
The hike from the ATV drop is short (5–15 minutes) but can feel strenuous due to elevation; it's not technical but needs steady footing.
