The air is sharp with altitude; distant ridgelines cut like pages against the sky while the ATVs hum, carrying small groups past rock outcrops and handsomely carved Inca masonry.

Maucallaqta is tied to origin myths of the Incas and contains well-preserved terraces, plazas and ritual stonework reflecting early imperial organization.
The site is vulnerable to erosion and visitor pressure; stick to paths, avoid touching carved surfaces, and carry out waste to help preserve the masonry and landscape.
