The sun is a flat coin as the convoy climbs Tizi n’Tichka, the air cooling with each switchback. By late afternoon the red ochre of Ait Ben Haddou gives way to the ragged palms and river scars of Todra Gorge, and then, impossibly, the landscape opens into the gold-hued billows of Erg Chebbi where camels tread silent tracks across dunes that rise like waves.
