The boat eases off Athy's jetty and the town recedes into brick and river-swept trees. Water presses at the hull and the River Barrow guides the route—under the compact arches of Horse Bridge and toward the mechanical lift of Ardreigh Lifting Bridge. The short hour becomes a slow-moving portrait: lock gates swing open, crew operate the lock the old way, and fields slide past in muted greens.

The Barrow Navigation was developed over centuries to support inland trade; structures like locks and lifting bridges reflect Victorian and earlier engineering for river transport.
This stretch of the Barrow is sensitive to bank erosion and aquatic habitat changes; keep to designated boarding points, avoid littering, and follow crew guidance to minimize disturbance.
