Course Description

ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising is an advanced sailing course designed for those seeking to expand their sailing expertise and gain the skills required to charter and command a bareboat independently. Building upon the knowledge acquired in ASA 101 and ASA 103, this public course delves into the intricacies of cruising navigation, boat systems, and provisioning for extended trips. Students will learn advanced sail handling techniques, such as heavy weather sailing and anchoring in challenging conditions, as well as how to manage crew responsibilities effectively. ASA 104 is the key to unlocking the world of independent bareboat cruising adventures and is an essential step for sailors aspiring to navigate coastal and offshore waters with self-reliance and expertise.

All course materials are provided including ASA 104 book and study guide. It is recommended to review your book prior to attending class.

By the completion of the course, students will have:

  • Learned how to sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered 30′-45′ sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions.
  • Learned about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring / mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather, and more.
