Armed Forces Day Paddle on the Susquehanna River: Free Kayak & Canoe Trips in West Falls PA

On May 16, join the Armed Forces Day Paddle on the Susquehanna River at West Falls, Pennsylvania—a free kayak or canoe outing offered to active-duty military, veterans, and reservists with valid ID. This community-focused event sends paddlers down a 4- or 5-mile stretch of the middle Susquehanna that threads through hardwood ridges, shale banks, and slow-moving riffles, offering a quiet, accessible river experience in Northeast Pennsylvania. The launch zone near West Falls provides immediate views of winding river bends and low bluffs draped in mixed oak and maple. Choose the 4-mile Quick Trip (about two hours) or the 5-mile float (about three hours). Both routes are flatwater paddles suitable for paddlers with basic strokes; the outfitter supplies kayaks, canoes, paddles, and life jackets, so you only need to arrive ready to learn and cruise. Expect stands of river birch, exposed shale shelves, and occasionally brackish-looking backwaters that hold frogs and migrating songbirds in spring. This paddle stands out because it pairs public celebration with a genuine river corridor: the Susquehanna is one of the longest rivers on the East Coast, shaping local history from Indigenous paths to 19th-century canals and present-day conservation efforts. The event’s free offer for service members makes a day on the water both a practical outing and a quiet tribute, while family and friends can join at regular rates, making it a social paddle with a clear purpose. Safety and simplicity are part of the appeal. Guides run a brief orientation before launch, covering paddling basics, river etiquette, and re-entry techniques. The current is usually gentle here, but wind and debris after storms can add challenge; be prepared for low-grade scouting and occasional shallow channels. Wildlife is abundant: keep an eye out for bald eagles circling thermals, great blue herons along banks, and turtles sunning on logs. Practicalities: arrive 15 minutes early to check in with ID, bring a dry bag for essentials, and expect a 2–3 hour window on the water depending on route choice. Wear layers and footwear that can get wet; in cooler months, add a splash layer. The paddle is a local-friendly way to connect with the Susquehanna’s natural rhythm, honor service members, and enjoy a river trip that’s accessible to beginners but rewarding enough for practiced paddlers. Launch conditions vary by season: spring snowmelt can raise levels and speed currents, while summer low water exposes sandbars and shallow eddies that make navigation more technical. Photography shines at river bends where migrating songbirds and braided shallows form reflective pools; binoculars or a mid-telephoto lens pay off. If you have mobility concerns, contact the outfitter in advance so staff can advise on vehicle access and assisted entry.
