At first light the highway out of San José unfolds toward Arenal; low clouds slip off banana and coffee fields and the volcano rises, watching the valley. Guests meet their naturalist guide at a private reserve where gentle horses wait on a trail that slips into humid rainforest. The ride follows narrow tracks, crosses small streams, and opens to sudden views of Arenal’s conical flank—an active stratovolcano whose 1968 eruption reshaped the landscape and local livelihoods.
