You start on a raised walkway where the rainforest breathes under your boots and the canopy shifts like a living roof. Mistico Park’s hanging bridges thread you through high foliage, and orchids and toucans punctuate the green. The air carries heat and humidity; every step feels like entering a different layer of the jungle.
moderate.
7–8 hours.
Moderate: comfortable walking on uneven surfaces, able to manage stairs and short lava-rock stretches.
The lava-field section is about 2 km over uneven rock with some short climbs; it’s manageable for anyone with moderate fitness and steady footing.
Swimming is permitted when conditions are safe, but strong currents or heavy rain can close access; follow your guide’s direction.
The tour is private and pace can be adapted, but the waterfall descent includes ~500 stairs which can be challenging for small children or those with mobility issues.
Expect canopy species like toucans, keel-billed toucans, squirrel monkeys, and howler monkeys, plus abundant birdlife and tree frogs.
Arenal’s 1968 eruption reshaped the landscape and local settlements; the visible lava flows are a recent chapter in the region’s geological story.
Parks here emphasize guided access to protect regenerating lava fields and sensitive canopy habitats; stay on trails, avoid single-use plastics, and follow guide instructions.
