About

Visit the charming fishing village of Bugøynes from Kirkenes. Bugøynes (Pykeijä) is a small fishing village located in northern Norway by the gleaming shores of Varangerfjord. The charming village is a very small place, stretched onto a neck of land surrounded by the ocean. Its population is only 180 and most are Finnish descendants who earn their living from the sea. Bugøynes has a fascinating history since it was established by Finnish settlers in the 1800s. This is the reason why the village is also called Little Finland (Pikku-Suomi), or by its Finnish name Pykeijä. A strong Finnish sauna culture still exists among the people, and you can hear Finnish language been used by the locals. Bugøynes is also one of the few villages in northern Norway which was not burnt down during World War II.

Bugøynes is also known for its king crabs. The king crab fishing industry started in Bugøynes in the 1990s and saved the struggling village from bankruptcy. Nowdays there is one king crab processing plant operating in the village.

The daytrip offers the best bits of the Finnish-Norwegian village including a thrilling experience of arctic bathing straight from the sauna, and a king crab safari including a taste of the famous king crabs freshly caught from the sea. During the day you will also learn many interesting fact of the area and village.
