A gray dawn breaks over the jeep road to Chame and the Himalaya throws its first clean light across sharp ridgelines. On day one the group leaves Besisahar by vehicle, then steps onto a trail that climbs through oak and rhododendron, opens to barley fields and high stone villages, and finally narrows into the exposed, wind-scoured amphitheaters above Manang.
