You settle into a new Mercedes Sprinter as the highway peels away from downtown Anchorage and the mountains press close — Turnagain Arm stretches out like a shallow, tidal mirror dotted with sandbars and froth. Bald eagles wheel above the shoulder; gulls ride the winds. The road follows the arm’s steep slopes until you reach the Portage Glacier viewpoint and, soon after, the single-lane Anton Anderson Tunnel that ferries vehicles and trains into Whittier.
