Situated at 81st St & 5th Ave in Brooklyn, New York, Bowery Boys Walks offers an uncommon dive into one of the world’s most iconic cultural venues—the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While millions pass through the Met’s vast halls each year, this tour peels back the curtain to reveal stories and secrets most visitors never get to hear. Guided by Patrick, a longtime Met guard and acclaimed memoir author, the 75-minute experience ventures into deep corners of the museum’s sprawling collection, spanning over two million square feet.
What sets this tour apart is Patrick’s rare insider perspective. More than a standard guided walk, you gain an intimate view of the museum’s inner workings and its 150-year history. Standing outside, you’ll grapple with the monumentality of the façade stretching four city blocks long before entering to navigate at least six curatorial departments. Greek and Roman statues, Egyptian artifacts, Asian masterpieces, medieval relics, and European paintings offer a path through time and art styles.
Patrick’s stories blend official history with candid moments from his years on the floor, including quirky encounters and unexpected art backstories. From the intricate work that keeps the Met running with a staff of over two thousand, to the unique aesthetics behind famed pieces, the tour unearths perspectives that shift how you see the museum itself.
This experience is ideal for anyone with a thirst for history, art, or cultural storytelling, particularly those who want more than surface-level viewing. Because it takes place entirely inside, weather won’t disrupt the adventure. Bowery Boys Walks’ Met tour stands out as a rare chance to see New York’s cultural heavyweight through the eyes of someone who knows its every nook.
