Amsterdam’s canal ring was carved in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age; the Light Festival launched in 2012 to animate the winter months with public art.
Many festival partners use electric boats and low-energy lighting to reduce impact; visitors should avoid flash photography near lightworks and respect canal wildlife by not feeding birds.
