Amsterdam grew from a dammed river crossing into a 17th-century mercantile hub; the Canal Belt was a planned expansion that shaped the city's social and commercial life.
The city manages visitor impact by preserving historic canal houses and regulating boat traffic; respect private residences, avoid littering, and use public transit where possible.
