The morning van pulls out of Rapid City before sunrise, the Black Hills looming as a dark ridge against a pale sky. By the time you reach Keystone, steam curls from a century-old locomotive and the depot smells faintly of oil and coffee. You step aboard a vintage coach as the conductor calls names and the engine breathes; for the next hour the train threads a ten-mile route, climbing and falling past old mining camps and offering sudden views of Black Elk Peak pushing above the pines.
