Embark on an unforgettable overnight backpacking adventure in Alaska, guided by a Wilderness First Responder. Perfect for beginners and seasoned hikers alike, this customizable trip includes route planning, off-trail navigation, and essential wilderness skills. Experience breathtaking scenery while hiking through diverse terrain, making memories in Alaska's stunning backcountry.

An overnight trip designed to introduce you to backpacking in Alaska

This trip is ideal for:

  • Travelers who want a custom, backcountry experience with a local guide.
  • Travelers with some hiking experience, but are new to backpacking or plan to backpack independently during their time in Alaska.
  • Travelers who appreciate educational opportunities and the chance to learn about the area.

Price:

$975 per person, minimum 2 people required

Hiking and camping details:

  • Most backpacking trips are a total of 5-15 miles of walking on a combination of trails, old mining roads, tundra and off-trail adventure
  • Elevation gain for this trip varies depending on your desired activity level. You can expect most backpacking trips to include at least 1,000 feet of elevation gain.
  • Expect to hike for over 5 hours on both days.
  • At camp, visitors will sleep 2 guests per 3 person tent. Meals, tents and sleeping bags are included.
  • Guests can expect to carry 25-35 lbs over uneven terrain.

Transportation time:

1-3 hours depending on our hiking location.

Difficulty:

Moderately strenuous to challenging. Most of our backpacking trips take place in the Talkeetna mountains, starting from Hatcher Pass. If not backpacking in Hatcher Pass, we also love taking visitors to off-trail locations via Mat-Su Borough trails and Chugach State Park.

Experience required?

Recommended. To enjoy this trip, we recommend you have some hiking experience or are a passionate outdoor adventurer. Don’t hesitate to call us if you’re unsure.

  • Solo traveler? If you are the only person booked for this trip, we will reach out 1 day prior to your scheduled departure time. You will have the option to cancel (with full refund) or book a second seat on the trip.

What to bring:

  • Comfortable, worn in hiking boots
  • Comfortable attire (long hiking pants and a breathable shirt). No cotton or denim if possible, as it gets very heavy and cold when wet.
  • 35-50 liter backpack (we have gear available for rent if needed)
  • Additional layers (hat, liner gloves, light jacket)
  • Rain gear - If you have it, carrying both rain pants and a rain jacket is recommended
  • Water (1-2 liters recommended)
  • Light snacks
