A thin mountain wind carries the smell of pine as you cross from Bishkek’s flat avenues into a narrow valley where granite ribs rise abruptly into the sky. The road narrows and the city’s noise thins; within an hour you’re stepping onto trails that thread willow and spruce and head toward the Aksai waterfall and upper viewpoints.
