Al Fahidi grew in the late 19th century as merchant families, many of Persian origin, built homes near the creek to engage in trade; the district preserves traditional wind-tower architecture.
Restoration projects aim to protect historic fabric while managing tourist pressure; visitors are encouraged to avoid touching fragile plasterwork and to dispose of waste responsibly.
