Dawn thins the hills east of Kigali into long gray ribs as the convoy heads toward Akagera. By the time the sun clears the scrub, the savannah opens — lakes mirror the sky and grasses lean under a nervous breeze that seems to dare the first elephant out of the trees. The tour puts visitors inside a working ecosystem where hippos bellow from reed beds and giraffes nibble the uppermost acacia branches.
