Accessible Highland Cow & Alpaca Experience at Newton Farm, Inverarity

Newton Farm’s Highland Cow & Alpaca Experience offers a short, accessible farm encounter on a working arable and livestock farm near Inverarity, Scotland. In a carefully managed setting, visitors travel across farm tracks in an 18-seat passenger trailer (with a wheelchair anchor point) to a secure visitor enclosure where Highland cows, hand-fed alpacas and sometimes Hector, the resident Highland bull, come close enough for feeding, grooming and photographs. The scene is plain—open fields, seasonal crops, and slow-moving farm machinery—yet the focus is on the animals: thick-coated Highland cattle with long horns and alpacas with expressive faces and soft fleece. The design of this experience makes it unusually welcoming. Rather than wandering into a field with free-moving cattle, guests remain in a designated enclosure while guides manage animal approach and behaviour. That controlled access is ideal for families, older visitors, people with reduced mobility and anyone who wants the animals to set the pace. The farm provides one free registered carer place and asks visitors to contact staff ahead of booking if they have specific mobility or support needs. Highlights include close-up photography opportunities, chances to groom a cooperative cow when conditions allow, guided interpretation about animal care, and a trailer journey that gives a snapshot of real farm life—livestock, crops and seasonal activity. Animal interactions depend on welfare and daily management; staff prioritise safety and the animals’ choice to engage. Practical details: sessions run about one hour, groups are capped at 18, and arrival 15 minutes early is requested. Wear sturdy shoes and weatherproof layers; the experience is outdoors and ground can be uneven. Follow staff instructions around livestock and keep children closely supervised. The farm won Scotland’s Best Outdoor or Adventure Experience at VisitScotland’s 2025 Thistle Awards, underlining its reputation for accessible, high-quality interpretation and animal welfare. For photographers and families the set-up is forgiving—bright winter coats on cows, the alpacas’ curious expressions and the characterful profile of a Highland bull make memorable images at low angles from inside the enclosure. The experience is a good complement to wider Highland visits and a controlled way to meet iconic Scottish breeds for those who prefer a safer animal-encounter format on a working farm. Booking is limited and groups depart on a strict schedule; participants should arrive by vehicle, follow visitor parking signage and wait in their car until check-in. After the return journey the team provides a hot handwash station for thorough hygiene. This careful choreography—the trailer ride, the enclosed viewing, the hygiene steps—turns a simple farm visit into an accessible, educational and low-stress animal encounter that suits first-time visitors as much as repeat guests seeking authentic contact with Scotland’s signature breeds. Bring patience, curiosity, and respect for animal boundaries.
