You leave Luxor before dawn, the desert light sharpening the road ahead as the Nile’s distant ribbon fades behind. By late afternoon the air changes — date palms and the broad curve of the river herald Aswan — where a water taxi slips you to Philae and an island temple that was carefully moved stone-by-stone when the High Dam raised Lake Nasser.
easy.
2 days (approx 48 hours).
Suitable for most fitness levels; involves short walks, steps, and long periods in vehicles.
The route runs Luxor→Aswan (~220 km, ~3–4 hours) with an additional Aswan→Abu Simbel leg (~280 km, ~3–4 hours), so expect multiple hours each way on paved desert highways.
Admission is included on this tour; most sites require presentation of a passport for ticketing, so bring your original and keep a copy stored separately.
Both sites are mostly outdoors with limited shaded areas; Philae has shaded courtyards and Abu Simbel offers partial shade from the temple overhangs but minimal overall shelter.
The itinerary is rated easy and accommodates a wide range of travelers, but there are steps and uneven surfaces at temples; contact the operator in advance for mobility assistance or infant seat needs.
Abu Simbel and Philae were both dismantled and relocated during construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s to prevent submersion; the rescue was an international archaeological effort.
Visitor pressure and lake-level changes can stress fragile stone and local ecosystems — stick to paths, avoid touching reliefs, and support licensed local guides and community-run crafts.
Memphis Tours operates guided outdoor trips and adventures with an emphasis on safety, stewardship, and memorable experiences.
