History

Fort Lauderdale’s canals were expanded in the early 20th century to support yachting and waterfront development; Las Olas Avenue later became a commercial spine linking river neighborhoods to the beach.

Conservation

Coastal erosion and sea-level rise are active concerns — stick to marked access points to avoid destabilizing dunes and support local beach stewardship programs.
