You step out of the air-conditioned car and into a humid, green hush — the Sinharaja canopy presses close, cicadas measure your pulse, and river mist clings to your sleeves. Over the next eight days the island moves around you: mangrove skiffs at dawn on the Madu River, the low tromp of elephants at Udawalawe, a tented night under Yala’s star-swept sky, and cool, wind-harrowed plateaus at Horton Plains.
challenging.
8 days.
Participants should be in good physical condition: ready for multiple half-day hikes, bumpy jeep rides, and a full day of rafting/cycling; not ideal for limited mobility.
Most nationalities require a valid passport and an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival—check Sri Lanka’s official immigration website and bring a photocopy of your passport.
Expect a mix: short rainforest treks and moderate hill walks (Little Adam’s Peak) plus longer plateau hikes (Horton Plains ~9–10 km); rafting is grade II–III, so reasonable fitness is needed.
Common sightings include Sri Lankan elephants at Udawalawe, a chance of leopards in Yala, and a variety of endemic birds in Sinharaja and the Madu River wetlands.
The Yala night is a tented campsite with basic but comfortable arrangements and a BBQ dinner; most other nights are in double rooms on a B&B basis.
Sri Lanka’s hill country was reworked by 19th-century tea plantations; many current trails and roads follow colonial-era routes connecting plantations and markets.
Many sites are protected national parks and UNESCO-listed rainforest; stick to marked trails, avoid single-use plastics, and follow guide instructions to minimize wildlife disturbance.
