The bus pulls away from Reykjavík as a low, salt-scented wind slides across Faxaflói Bay and the city shrinks into a scatter of colorful rooftops. For the next eight days Iceland will set the tempo: sudden, glacial stillness that demands silence; volcanic slopes that seem to have been shaped by an impatient sculptor; and coastal stretches where Atlantic swells push bright ice onto black sand and dare you to look away.
