You step off the small plane in Maun and the air changes—dry, warm, threaded with dust and the distant sound of waterfowl. Within hours you'll be threading channels in a narrow mokoro as papyrus walls and watery grasses dare you forward, then trading the reed boat for a canvas tent under a sky that throws stars like embers.
