The first light on Kilimanjaro comes slow and cold, painting the volcanic shoulders in pale gold as you leave Moshi and drive to Machame Gate. The forest greets you—wet leaves and moss that seem to breathe—before the trail opens into moorland, then the jagged profile of the Shira Plateau, and finally the lunar scree above Barafu.

Machame is more scenic and slightly steeper than Marangu but offers better acclimatization than shorter routes; it’s considered challenging due to altitude and summit day length.
No technical climbing is required for the Machame Route, though crampons may be used in unusual icy conditions; guides supply safety equipment as needed.
With proper fitness, adherence to the 7-day schedule, and attention to acclimatization, Machame has a high summit success rate, but weather and altitude illness can prevent summits.
Meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and camping equipment including tents, sleeping mats, and two nights’ hotel accommodation (pre- and post-trek) are typically included.
