Morning light in the high Andes cuts across terraced slopes as travelers step from an air-conditioned van into thin, dry air that demands a steady breath. The itinerary moves from Cusco’s stone streets to the Sacred Valley’s farming hamlets, up the ridgeline to Rainbow Mountain’s striped flank and along the glacier-fed trail to Humantay’s turquoise lagoon, finishing with the hourglass ruins of Machu Picchu overlooking the Urubamba Gorge.
challenging.
6 days.
Participants should have good cardiovascular fitness and prior day-hike experience; expect sustained uphill walking at high altitude.
Tickets are purchased according to current availability from Peru’s Ministry of Culture (typically circuits 1 or 2); if no tickets are available you will receive a full refund for that portion of the package.
Both are short but steep: Rainbow Mountain is roughly 1–1.5 hours uphill at ~5,000 m, Humantay is ~1.5 hours to 4,250 m—challenging mainly due to altitude rather than technical terrain.
Mild symptoms are common; drink water, rest on arrival to Cusco, avoid alcohol, ascend slowly, and inform guides—oxygen is available if symptoms worsen.
The tour includes listed breakfasts and lunches, 3-star hotels in Cusco and Aguas Calientes, train tickets between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, and select transport as outlined in the itinerary.
The route follows Inca arteries connecting highland communities to administrative centers; Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century and later reintroduced to the world in 1911.
Visitor limits and circuit routing protect fragile ruins and trails—stay on marked paths, pack out trash, and avoid feeding wildlife to reduce human impact.
