The trail starts in the damp hush of rainforest, where dripping ferns and the distant chatter of monkeys mark the first steps of a six-day Machame Route climb. You move upward through distinct bands of ecosystem—rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert—each with its own air and attitude. By night the camps sit under a cold sky; by midnight on summit day the headlamps form a slow procession toward Uhuru Peak.
