You step out of Queen Alia’s humidity into Amman’s limestone terraces, the city’s honed skyline giving way to Roman columns and desert horizons. Over six days the landscape changes like a quick hand of cards: olive-scented hills, the marble colonnades of Jerash, rose-red canyons in Petra, and the wind-carved mountains of Wadi Rum where sand and stone dare you to slow down.
