5-Day Winter Mountaineering Skills Course in Snowdonia, North Wales

Snowdonia's north face is a classroom that teaches respect: sharp ridges, glacial corries and mixed volcanic and sedimentary bedrock make for honest winter mountaineering. Based from Llanberis in North Wales, the 5 Day Winter Mountaineering Skills course runs through the Ogwen Valley, Carneddau and Glyderau ranges, the Llanberis Pass and the Snowdon Massif, giving progressive terrain to learn crampon use, ice-axe arrest, navigation and avalanche awareness. This course is built for hikers who already have solid three-season mountain experience and good fitness. Over five mountain days instructors - qualified Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors (WMCI) and Winter Mountain Leaders (WML) - teach in small groups (maximum six clients per instructor) so coaching is focused and immediate. Training adapts to conditions: if snow is light the focus shifts to winter technique on bare ground; when the white stuff falls you'll practice step-cutting, crampon footwork and axe self-arrest in real winter terrain. Terrain is varied and revealing: glacial cwms, rocky aretes and steep grassy ramps on Ordovician volcanic and later slate bands test footwork and route choice; the carved corries and steep gullies of the Carneddau and Glyderau are excellent for reading snowpack and choosing safe lines. Daily briefs include weather and avalanche forecasts, and you'll learn to interpret the NIVO test and local avalanche information. Practical skills covered include crampon fitting and adjustments, use of a mountaineering axe (not a technical ice tool), self-arrest, cutting and kicking steps, travel on steeper ground, emergency snow shelters and basic transceiver awareness. Navigation drills span compass, contour interpretation and modern mapping apps so you can plan and execute routes in poor visibility. Equipment standards are strict: B2 rated boots and C2 crampons are recommended; microspikes and uncrampon-rated summer boots are not suitable. Crampon, ice axe and helmet hire is available for five-day courses at £10 per set per day; boot hire can be arranged through https://www.outdoorhire.co.uk (discount offered). Typical nearby bases within a 30-minute drive include Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis. This is an instructional week, not a guided summit push: expect mountain days, practical coaching and the chance to consolidate personal skills into safer winter decision-making. For anyone looking to move from summer scrambling and hiking to confident travel in winter mountain conditions, these five days in Snowdonia provide focused tuition, real terrain and instructors with practical experience across UK and international winter mountaineering. Meet in Llanberis each morning to kit up, check forecasts and head into chosen valleys; instructors will adjust objectives to conditions, and the small groups make it straightforward to get tailored feedback. Pack layered clothing, a good rucksack and a willingness to practice repeatedly - the skills you build return dividends in safety and confidence. Book early; spaces limited.
