On Day One the road takes you through Hvalfjörður tunnel, past Grábrók’s scarred cone and over the Öxnadalsheidi plateau, each stop a mood-shift: farmed valleys that smell of hay, basalt columns rising from the sea, and suddenly Akureyri’s red roofs tucked into fjord light.
