You step through a fringe of wet montane forest and the air changes — cooler, moss-scented, threaded with bird calls. The Sirimon trail eases you up through bamboo and moorland to Old Moses Hut at about 3,300 m; each day trades forest shade for wind-scoured ridges until the world opens on Lenana’s shoulder at 4,985 m. On a clear dawn the two jagged summits of Kilimanjaro appear like distant ships beyond the horizon as sunlight chisels the glacier-etched walls of Mt. Kenya.

Yes — climbers require park entrance permits and camping/hut reservations administered by Mt Kenya National Park; guides typically handle these arrangements.
The Lenana push is non-technical but physically demanding due to elevation (4,985 m) and scree; good fitness and gradual ascent over multiple days are important.
The clearest windows are typically January–February and July–August; avoid the long rains (March–May) when trails are muddier and visibility lower.
Guides are required in the park and porters are strongly recommended to carry heavy loads and support acclimatization and safety.
Mount Kenya’s rugged core formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago; its peaks and glaciers have long cultural importance to local Kikuyu communities.
Mount Kenya is a designated national park and UNESCO site; stick to established trails, pack out waste, and use local guides to support conservation and community livelihoods.
