Dawn in the highlands of Cao Bang breaks cool and clear; the road curls through passes that open and close like pages of a travel journal. You’ll leave Hanoi before sunrise and spend the first day threading through Wind Pass, Khau Khang and Cao Bac before arriving at Mat Than (Thủng) Mountain, whose sculpted limestone ridges and a distinctive eye-like hole cut into the rock frame a wide northern sky.
