The engine kicks and the wind immediately lays the island out before you: red sand whipping past, black volcanic ribs of Serra Negra rising like a burned spine, and the Atlantic glinting to the horizon. On a 500cc 4x4 quad you ride coast to coast in four hours, moving from broad desert dunes to the green pockets of Terra Boa and the saline mirror of an old volcanic crater.
