A wind-driven ridge opens and the world tilts: deep gorges cut into basalt, a waterfall unspools into a 500m abyss, and a troop of gelada baboons picks at the highland grasses as you approach. On day one you climb out of Gondar’s plains to Sankaber (≈3,250 m), trading cultivated foothills for the ragged escarpment that defines the Simien range.

Expect 4–8 hours of walking per day with steep ascents and descents; trails are non-technical but altitude makes them more demanding.

Common sightings include gelada baboons, lammergeyer, thick-billed ravens and, often near Chennek and Buwahit, the endemic Walia ibex.
Camps are basic with communal tents and local cooking; mules carry most gear but bring a good mat and warm sleeping bag for cold nights.
