You arrive to San Martín de los Andes with wind off Lake Lácar in your face and the smell of damp lenga trees drifting from the forest. The town’s timber-frame buildings hold echoes of settlers and mountain guides; beyond them the Andean peaks rise, patient and sculpted. Over the next four days, a van becomes your viewpoint, ushering you along the Route of the Seven Lakes, through Araucaria groves, to the raw presence of Lanín Volcano and the reflective calm of Huechulafquén.
