The morning air tastes of dust and diesel as the road unspools north from Nairobi, and by midday the landscape has changed from suburban sprawl to open savanna. At Ol Pejeta the grass leans in the sun and the conservancy’s rhinos stand like heavy punctuation on the horizon; farther north, the Ewaso Nyiro River threads Samburu, pushing life into a drier country where reticulated giraffes and Grevy’s zebra browse the riverine acacias.
