Dawn breaks over the rim of Mount Elgon with a thin, cool light that slides through bamboo and heather, and the trail seems to breathe underfoot. On the Bushiyi route, hikers move from 1,800m trailhead through dense primary forest, past carved caves and waterfalls, and up into open heather that exposes Wagagai Peak on the skyline. The mountain’s wind shifts suddenly, pushing you toward ridgelines and sweeping views of neighboring peaks: Masaba, Koitobos, and Sudek.
