You leave the lagoon-side town of Negombo before dawn, the van humming as the coastline blurs into paddy fields and then climbs into the central highlands. Udawalawe has one of the highest probabilities for elephant sightings and operators often advertise near-guarantees, but wildlife sightings cannot be 100% promised—timing and luck matter.
