A cool Andean dawn breaks over Huaraz as minivans spool down the Callejón de Huaylas and the first light pins the snowy cornices of the Cordillera Blanca. You stand at 3,080 m watching glacial peaks—Huascarán, Artesonraju—push their shadows across turquoise water at Laguna Parón. The air is thin, sharp, and honest; every breath tells you altitude is part of the route.
challenging.
4 days (active hikes 3–8 hours per day).
Good cardiovascular fitness and prior high-altitude trekking experience recommended; be comfortable hiking 6–10 km with 600–1,000 m elevation gain.
No technical climbing experience is required for the usual Mateo route, but prior high-altitude trekking experience and basic glacier skills are strongly recommended.
The dry season (May–September) offers the most stable weather and clearer summit views; shoulder months can still work but expect more precipitation.
Ascend gradually, hydrate, avoid alcohol, consider acetazolamide if prescribed, and descend if symptoms worsen—inform guides immediately.
Huascarán National Park entry and many lagoon-area admissions are typically included in guided packages, but confirm with the operator before booking.
Chavín de Huántar was a major ceremonial center from roughly 900–200 BCE, influencing Andean iconography and religious architecture across the highlands.
Huascarán National Park protects fragile glacial environments under pressure from warming and tourism; stick to trails, pack out waste, and follow guide protocols to minimize impact.
