Morning mist lifts off a wide blackwater lagoon as a wooden skiff parts the glassy surface. The Cuyabeno River pushes you toward a large freshwater lake where the lodge perches on stilts and sunsets set the water on fire. Canoes slip through narrow channels, toucans call from the canopy, and at night the forest breathes close enough to hear frogs answer one another.
moderate.
4 days (approx.).
Suitable for travelers in decent health who can handle 3–5 hour rainforest hikes on uneven, muddy terrain and several hours of canoeing.
Most travelers fly into Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja) and join a scheduled transfer by road and river; the operator handles the Lago Agrio–Cuyabeno transfers included in the tour.
Consult a travel clinic—yellow fever and routine vaccines are commonly recommended for Amazon travel; antimalarials may be advised depending on your itinerary.
Lodge accommodations are rustic but comfortable with shared double rooms, meals provided and basic amenities; expect limited hot water and intermittent power in remote areas.
Children are allowed but must be supervised; non-swimmers can still participate—life vests are used for all canoe and boat activities and guides enforce safety protocols.
The Cuyabeno Reserve was declared protected in 1979 to conserve a segment of the Amazon Basin; indigenous groups such as the Siona continue traditional livelihoods along its rivers.
The reserve relies on low-impact ecotourism and regulated access—follow guide instructions, carry out waste, and avoid single-use plastics to minimize your footprint.
Latin Adventures Cía Ltda operates guided outdoor trips and adventures with an emphasis on safety, stewardship, and memorable experiences.
