You step off the boat at dawn and the river opens like a moving wall of green: tannin-streaked water, banks of buttressed trees and the distant chatter of howler monkeys. La Perla slips along the Marañón and Ucayali, engines muted for wildlife watches, while guides scan the canopy and call out species as the sun paints the fog.

Suitable for most fitness levels; be comfortable boarding small skiffs, walking short jungle trails, and doing early-morning stand-and-watch sessions.
Yellow fever vaccination is commonly recommended for Amazon travel; confirm with a travel clinic. Bring antimalarial advice from a physician and pack a basic first-aid kit and diarrhea remedies.
Connectivity is limited to non-existent in much of the reserve—plan for offline maps and limited contact; the boat may have intermittent signal near towns.
The trip requires boarding small skiffs and navigating uneven jungle trails and boat gangways, so it is not ideal for travelers with significant mobility limitations.
Wildlife viewing is strong year-round, but the dry season (roughly June–September) often improves access to trails and oxbow lakes; river levels change which affects which channels are visited.
Iquitos and nearby Nauta developed as river trade hubs; the Pacaya Samiria area was later designated a national reserve to protect floodplain ecosystems shaped by seasonal river dynamics.
