You arrive in Amman at dawn, the city still cool while the road west drops toward the Dead Sea’s mirror surface. By midday the water’s dense salt lifts you off your feet; later the desert swallows the horizon as a 4x4 bites into rust-red dunes at Wadi Rum. Finally the Siq narrows and, after a slow walk between towering sandstone walls, El-Khazneh opens like a carved jaw of rose stone.
moderate.
4 days.
Suitable for travelers who can walk 2–4 hours across varied terrain and climb stairs; not technically demanding but requires stamina for uphill sections.
A Jordan Pass purchased before arrival covers Petra entry and visa fees if bought prior to arrival; if you don’t have one bring cash to pay local entrance fees as specified by the operator.
Expect 2–4 hours of walking in Petra on the guided portion with optional longer climbs (Monastery). Wadi Rum uses short, bumpy 4x4 excursions with short walks at viewpoints.
You float rather than swim due to high salinity; avoid getting water in eyes or mouth, don’t enter with open wounds, and rinse with fresh water immediately after.
Transportation is wheelchair-accessible, but Petra’s uneven paths and high-step climbs like the Monastery are challenging; contact the operator to arrange special assistance or golf-cart services at Petra by request.
The Nabatean kingdom carved Petra into sandstone more than two millennia ago; Wadi Rum later became notable in 20th-century history through T.E. Lawrence and as a Bedouin homeland.
These landscapes are ecologically fragile; stick to marked paths, minimize single-use plastics and respect local water scarcity by conserving water whenever possible.
