Morning light slides down the stone roofs of Gjirokastër as the minibus eases out of town and the mountains open up. By midmorning the Vjosa’s current calls you forward — a wild river still allowed to shift and braid across its gravel bars — while the lagoon at Karavasta waits with islands of reed and the occasional, curious pelican.
