Dawn spills across the Kampala–Jinja highway as your van peels out of the city and the air cools toward Mbale. By late morning the road climbs into the highland fringe of Mount Elgon, coffee bushes crouching on terraces and the horizon opening into a ragged edge of cliffs. At Sipi the falls arrive in stages—three curtains of water, roughly 85 m, 75 m and 100 m—each one framed by stepped farmland and black volcanic rock.
