The Mara tests your senses: wind carrying dust and the sharp cry of a raptor, sun warming the backs of grazing wildebeest.

The Masai Mara is named for the Maasai pastoralists and the Mara River; the reserve was formally protected in the mid-20th century to conserve migrating wildlife.
Conservation efforts focus on community-based tourism and anti-poaching patrols; visitors support local economies by choosing operators that employ Maasai guides and respect grazing agreements.
