You step off the ferry at dawn and the air changes: sea salt and diesel give way to a thin, cool wind that pushes up from the Tengger caldera. On day one the road climbs through coffee plantations and volcanic scrub toward Bromo; by night the village lights sink beneath a cloud of stars.

Good cardiovascular fitness and leg strength are required for steep stair climbs and a 1–2 hour predawn trek to Ijen; not suitable for those with serious respiratory or heart issues.
The Ijen ascent is a 1–2 hour climb over uneven trail—expect steep sections and rough footing; a moderate to high fitness level makes the climb easier.
Blue fire is produced by burning sulfur and is visible at night, but visibility depends on wind and gas conditions; local guides will assess safety and timing.
