The falls lie in an area shaped by volcanic flows and river incision; local communities around Puerto Plata and Sosua have long used the river for milling and recreation.
Visitors are asked not to use soap or sunscreen in pools, to carry out trash, and to respect guide instructions — entrance fees support local conservation and livelihoods.
