Doors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the Tour. Our Souvenir Shop is open and available at that time for you to visit while waiting for your tour to start.

This Missouri State Penitentiary tour discusses the history of the site and talks about strange and unusual occurrences behind the walls. In this tour, guests are guided through Housing Unit 1 (Control Center), A-Hall - built in 1868 (with LIMITED ACCESS), the Upper Yard, Housing Unit 3 and the Gas Chamber.

Additional Information

  • Remember to dress weather appropriately, as there is no heat or air conditioning at the facility. We do not allow Food or Drink on the property. We sell bottled water in our Souvenir Shop.
  • We do allow you to take photographs while on the tour - we simply ask that you not videotape the tours.
  • Parking is provided on-street (at no charge) on Lafayette Street or State Street.
  • Everyone participating in a tour at Missouri State Penitentiary must sign a Waiver and Release of Liability - for those under age 18 a Parent or Guardian must sign the waiver also. An Electronic Waiver will be sent to you for signatures by all parties in your group.
